Basking in Gravity may appear to be another yoga class using a non-traditional soundtrack to shake things up a bit, but it’s something weirder or at least sloppier than that. This participatory art/mindfulness experience combines elements of audiovisual installation and group performance with yin yoga and sitting meditation, creating an opportunity for us to explore our relationship with one of the fundamental forces of the universe. The project is informed by my background teaching slow yoga and practicing Zen, but it’s also a freeform experiment in group movement, each of us following the downward trajectory mapped out by our unique physical form’s direct relationship with gravity. No experience required; in some ways the less experience, the better.
Basking in Gravity takes place in an immersive audiovisual environment that includes organic video projections and a soundtrack – inspired by the long-running Inter-Dimensional Music FM broadcast - that builds from contemplative drone, devotional jazz, dub, and ambient music to a catharsis of cosmic metal. For better or worse, I’ve been mixing the tunes live from my yoga mat, which can get a little confusing, but that’s what makes it an art project. All of the projections are created by me from my own photos and videos: these are bespoke GIFs, not misanthropic AI abominations.
You can stream or download our August soundtrack – as heard on the booming Healer soundsystem, and on your bluetooth speaker via Inter-Dimensional Music’s weekly FM broadcast – from the shared drive or Mixcloud archive. It features heavyweight drone duets, doomy proto-Buddhist chanting, deep tissue riddim & voicing, wetlands devotionals, bass-forward bugandan drumming, ecstatic dance music that uses the concept of enlightenment for hedonistic ends, and ecstatic death metal that takes the concept of savasana, i.e. “final resting pose,” aka “corpse pose” literally.

• Basking in Gravity is intended to be accessible to all bodies and experience levels. If you have particular questions or concerns, drop me an email or find me before class and we’ll figure something out.
• Yin yoga is a sinking, cooling, non-striving yoga practice: We recommend layers of comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
• We’ve got blocks and blankets, but please bring a yoga mat if you’ve got one.
• Masks are welcome, but not required.
• If you suspect that you’ve been exposed to COVID-19 – even if you have no symptoms – please join us another time!
• The new COVID-19 booster is available in Central Indiana and it would be just great for immunocompromised people (such as myself) as well as for people who spend time with epidemiologically-vulnerable people (which is also something I do) if more than 28% of the US population got vaccinated this time around.
Contact cosmic dot chambo at gmail if you have questions or concerns. Lots more info from past events at danielchamberlin.com as well.
You can also find more information on all of these things plus upcoming dates at @HealerDIY on IG, and/or subscribe (or lurk!) to the free (or if you’re feeling flush, paid!) Vøid Contemplation Tactics newsletter that you’re reading at this moment.
If you know anyone who might enjoy Vøid Contemplation Tactics or Basking in Gravity, please share the word. It means a lot! Thank you.
Word of mouth is our primary form of promotion. Vøid Contemplation Tactics doesn’t do much on social media, which is good for our mental health. As Dōgen's teacher told him, “You don't have to collect many people like clouds. Sitting with many fake practitioners is inferior to sitting with a few genuine practitioners. Choose a small number of true persons of the way and become friends with them.”
Thank you for lurking anonymously, subscribing for free, or subscribing for money. If you’d like to support this project with a one-time donation, you can also drop some change in the tip jar.
Or go get yourself something nice instead if it’s been that kind of day.
