Inter-Dimensional Music 20210917
North America's Gnarliest Mix for chanting, or sitting, or bowing, even special practice
stream | download | instrumental
Inter-Dimensional Music is heard weekly on the airwaves of Marfa Public Radio, LOOKOUT FM Los Angeles, and WQRT Indianapolis.
This week's session is inspired by the things we were reading and listening to while writing an essay about spiritual rituals and devotional music for Aquarium Drunkard. One of the more common threads connecting the disparate sounds on IDMusic is the idea of "ritual" as opposed to "narrative." Heavy or light, floating or sinking, metal or New Age, these are not always songs that tell stories. Drawing from the ancient concept of raga, these are sounds to "color the air." IDMusic strives to provide a vibe suitable for yoga, meditation, or whatever practice feels right for your set and setting.
For this first installment in the series, we're listening to sincere yet also detached explorations of ritual and spiritual practice. This includes, but is not limited to, deconstruction, critique, simulation, tribute, and/or outright appropriation. Listen for Hindu, Shia, and yoga music, along with James Ferraro's inquiries into the ecstasies of two very different UFO cults.
Our practice begins and ends with the sounds of accordion, didgeridoo, trombone, and human voices reverberating in a 2M-gallon cistern, aka (ahem) The Cistern Chapel. These reverberations courtesy Pauline Oliveros and the Deep Listening Band. We'll also hear Zen Master Seung Sahn's thoughts on the effectiveness of various devotional rituals throughout the broadcast: "When chanting, or sitting, or bowing, even special practice cannot help you if you are attached to your thinking."
For another variation on these themes, tune in to my guest session on Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard on dublab this Sunday, September 19 from 4-8p PT. "Rituales de lo habitual" is an hour of devotional heaviness inspired by the aforementioned essay of the same name.
