The Basking in Gravity Mobile Soundsystem is hitting the road this week for our first North American tour, mostly based on places we wanted to go anyway, because we want to see the people we know there. Come out and join us if you’re in the area! For this revitalized experience, I’m experimenting with DJing1 live during the session. And if all goes according to plan, we should be debuting new video works as well.
Generally speaking I defer to the hosting organization when it comes to the price of admission, so we’re going with a suggested donation of $10-20 per session throughout the tour. Though of course if you’re feeling particularly guilty for reaping more than you’ve sown in the fields of Babylon System, feel free to soothe those bad vibes by dropping a few more ducats into the virtual or IRL tip jar. We’ll also have the last of the “Twisted Roots” yin T-shirts, featuring the work of renown death metal logo creator Lucas Korte.
We feel right at home with the NOTAFLOF2 policy at Coaxial Arts in downtown Los Angeles. Every incidence of Basking in Gravity is unique, a collaboration between me and whoever shows up to the session, all of us making it our own work of slop-style performance art foregrounding the radical concepts at the heart of yoga and Zen practice. But since Coaxial’s roots are in the deeply weird Los Angeles noise scene, we’ve got a particularly rugged setlist planned, pulling from the heavy flow daze of Los Angeles’ New Age sanitation workers Robedoor, as well as modern day crushers like Tzompantli, whose ritualistic didgeridoo-forward Mesoamerican death metal will be well-familiar to listeners of our airwaves. As always, we’re not trying to set off any bad trips, but we will be fully embracing those dark, difficult emotions that we’re always talking about. It’s the suffering that connects us, not the cruelty that divides us.
If you don’t have the good fortune of dwelling in Indiana, New Mexico, or Los Angeles, we offer our sincere apologies for passing over your region this time out. If you have friends in Northern New Mexico, Southern California, or the Bay Area who might enjoy exploring their relationship with one of the fundamental forces of the universe as part of an art/mindfulness experience that combines elements of audiovisual installation and participatory performance with yin yoga and sitting meditation, by all means pass this invitation along.
For more information on this practice, visit my portfolio site, or skim through my interview with Psychedelic Sangha. If you have questions or concerns about accessibility for any reason, please drop me a line privately at cosmic dot chambo at gmail dot com. My intention is for these experiences to be accessible to all bodies and experience levels, and that means listening to you about what your body and experience level might require.
We are limiting attendance to allow for social-distancing, so sign up sooner rather than later. If you’re feeling under the weather, or suspect that you’ve been in proximity to particles and droplets of respiratory fluids that contain the SARS CoV-2 virus, stay home!
Inter-Dimensional Music continues transmission3 on Marfa Public Radio and WQRT Indianapolis while we’re on tour. We’ll be listening to a few vintage mixes from pre-pandemic Basking in Gravity sessions at StorageSpace, Healer here in Indiana, and the dearly departed Magick City of Brooklyn, NY. In keeping with the Luddite nature of this antiquated medium, I’ve been slow in updating the online archive: all transistor radio heads to the ID Music VIP. We’re also streaming live worldwide at all the usual times. Mixcloud archive updates soon-coming: thank you for your patience! There’s literally hundreds of hours in the subscribers-only VIP DL archive too.
We’ve also largely logged off from Twitter, which feels great. As someone on one of the podcasts that I enjoy but many people dislike once said, “this may not be the most chaotic and violent period of history, but it is the first time when we have 24/7 access to a constantly updated feed of all the horrors.” It’s important not to look away; it’s important to not look constantly. Also, I’ve never been good at Twitter. Still checking DMs but for most intents and purposes it’s gone all Burning Star Core over there: “operator dead … post abandoned.”
We’re still on Instagram sometimes, but for faster service use email and computer phone or leave a comment here on the direct mail blog service.
As always, I am so grateful that you choose to be here. And if this newsletter is no longer of interest, thank you for having been here: Smash that unsubscribe, and fare thee well!
blessing up and blessing down,
Daniel
If you know anyone who might find value or otherwise enjoy Void Contemplation Tactics, Basking in Gravity, or Inter-Dimensional Music, please pass this newsletter along. It means a lot to me!
Word of mouth is my primary form of promotion. My reach is limited on social media, which I’m increasingly convinced is a good thing. As Dōgen's teacher told him, “You don't have to collect many people like clouds. Having many fake practitioners is inferior to having a few genuine practitioners. Choose a small number of true persons of the way and become friends with them.”
If you’d like to support these projects with a one-time donation, you can also drop some ducats in the brand new tip jar.
By “DJing” I mean slooowly crossfading between a couple 20-30m long drones then smashing from dub into the promised “cosmic metal” crescendo.
No one turned away for lack of funds!
My friends from dublab tell me that LOOKOUT FM is on pause for the moment while they sort out terrestrial radio operations.
